The BARI Festival is an initiative founded by the crew at Jugglers Art Space in 2008, aimed at celebrating and acknowledging the creative and cultural contribution that is often harbored by ARIs within a city.
Brisbane is now home to several well established Artist Run Initiatives each working within their own unique artistic frameworks and services for artists and members of the public. This year BARI will be host to a variety of events between the 1st – 30th of October staged at several Artist Run Initiatives throughout Brisbane, each providing workshops, forums, open studios, live entertainment and art exhibitions showcasing Brisbane emerging artists.
BARI is committed to developing programs, supporting Brisbane Artist Run Initiatives and identifies the need for opportunities for emerging artists via creative and cultural avenues + spaces. By staging and facilitating an annual festival BARI seeks to maintain a critical and ongoing dialogue between Brisbane Artist Run Initiatives and aims to cultivate awareness of the vital role Artist Run Spaces contribute to a city like Brisbane.
EVENTS DURING BARI:
This year the BARI festival will host a program jam packed of events that will occur over the month of October and will accessible to the wider public. Events that take place during BARI are unique to the nature of each space, they often range form specialized workshops, open studios, forums, critical discussions, performance + installation/site specific works all run/staged by innovative arts practitioners.
BRISBANE ARTIST RUN SPACES:
Brisbane is now home to approximately 18 visual arts focused ARI’s each engaging in critical dialogue with each other and working within their unique conceptual frameworks. All of these spaces are located within 4km of the Brisbane CBD and occupy warehouses, conventional gallery spaces, window displays & converted Queenslanders.

8 Brisbane based Artist Run Initiatives will take up temporary residency inside the marquee located in the center of King George Square.
The SPACE+SHIP will host daily workshops/open studios facilitated by various ARI’s as well as a nightly program of experimental film and music from some of Brisbane’s leading Sound and Film collectives.

In 2010 the second issue of IP will be launched as part of the Brisbane Artist Run Initiatives Festival (BARI) and will document exhibitions by local ARIs. This issue is a joint project of The Wandering Room and Independent Exhibitions.
BON VOYAGE is a fledgling music imprint based in Brisbane, Australia. Circulating on vinyl and tape media, as well as digitally, the label will specialise in short-run limited editions, taking in psychedelia, lo-fi, noise, avant-pop and everything good that defies definition, from Australia and across the sea.

The Wandering Room will set up an installation of a “Doll House” and invite artists and the public to interact with the piece with materials provided.
QUT Student ARI will take up temporary residence and produce artworks live on site.
Co-Director of Spec Helen Rogers & local artists will be holding Zine making workshops between 12pm – 6pm, audiences are encouraged to participate and make their own zines to take home.
Workshops will run Sunday 10th, Monday 11th & Tuesday 12th Oct.

Jugglers Art Space will hold a mini art fair stall inside the space+ship from Monday 11th to Wednesday 13th , come meet the people behind one of Brisbane’s longest running ARI’s.
Artists & Directors of Love Love Studios, Andrew Harwood and Matt Johnson will take up temporary residence in the space+ship and utilize the space as a studio & gallery space on Monday and Tuesday 11th & 12th.

QCA Experimental Film Students will host a preview night of current works being produced by emerging artists.

The Fort will host a variety of workshops all day from street art, painting, songwriting and rapping.

Thirdhorror is a local collective of filmmakers originally spawned in the forests of Maleny out of the murky afterbirth of Sam Dixon & Adric Watson.
Thirdhorror will premier their new film.
Directed by Dan Whelan.

12 – 9pm
MSSR will host presentations by local community groups, artists, activists, educators, naturopaths and film directors. This program will run all day and occupy the entire space+ship.
Leading contemporary Indigenous art collective proppaNOW will screen their latest documentary by Carbon Media followed a Q&A session with members from proppaNOW.

Nine Lives at BARI
Nine Lives Gallery sits above an Italian restaurant in the heart of Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, Australia. In the last 10 months since Nine Lives Gallery has been opened, we have showcased 20 local, interstate and the odd international artists in the unique space.

Old Space at BARI
Old Space operates as artist’s studios and as an exhibition venue.
Established in late 2008, Old Space studios is now home to ten practicing artists and extends to a collective of up to sixteen artists for it’s ‘one night only’ exhibitions.
Old Space was estalished to address the scarcity of affordable studio spaces in brisbane in which visual artists could work and also engage with other emerging artists.

LoveLove at Bari
LoveLove studio is a collaborative effort with several goals; to bring peace and good will to the people via artistic expression; maintain a professional and contemporary atmosphere, and provide a community forum/venue for artistic display.
Lovelove studios’ comprise of two gallery spaces, an art and photography studio and a dance studio. Since its inception in early 2009 Lovelove studio has been host to several different shows. Ultimately this is an art/gallery studio however the space is very open to new enterprises. This is an artist run initiative and social networking establishment committed to providing a forum for emerging and successful artists in many fields.

Jugglers Art Space Inc is an artist run initiative that is committed to supporting emerging artists across a broad range of genres. It was founded in 2002 to address the critical shortage of exhibition and studio spaces available in Brisbane.
