BVAA Chats | Brisbane ARI’s: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly | Sunday 3 March 2024

Brisbane Visual Arts Advocacy (BVAA) began as a group of artist-artsworkers who gathered in early 2020. With some new energy and some new awareness of the world, we are reviving the ARI currently known as BVAA with a different approach! We (Amelia, Marisa and Noam) are keen to speak as ourselves, rather than as the voice of the artist-run scene. We’ll respond to what emerges without too many preconceived ideas in mind. We’re happy to poke and make ripples rather than concentrate solely on concrete advocacy outcomes. What We Are Keen To Do: • Share content from a variety of voices that candidly discusses what we’re doing and where we want to go as artists • Facilitate supportive discussions on arts work • Write submissions to funding bodies • Be a confidential place to go for peer support • Compile a massive, responsive email list for those moments that we need an instant collective voice • Continue hosting our advocacy resource list

ACCESS BELOW | BVAA Chats | Brisbane ARI’s: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly | Sunday 3 March 2024

Join us on the 3rd of March at 6pm for a livestreamed discussion on Brisbane Artist Run Inititives (ARI’s) with very special guest Paul Andrew.

Paul is an artist, writer, researcher, curator, and massive advocate of artist-led activity in Brisbane, and across Queensland. He runs ARI Remix – an online resource that has diligently archived Queensland Artist Run Initiatives from the 1980s to present day. He is the editor and publisher of EXTRA Zine – an anthology series that traces the memory of exhibitions and ARI’s past, and their lasting impact on our ecology today. AND he’s also run a bunch of ARI’s! Including being a core member of the Artworker’s Union Queensland from 1984-1986.

With Paul’s wealth of knowledge, we’re very excited to chat to them about all things ARI! The Good: (currect ARI activity that is thriving, and the benefits of starting your own initiative), The Bad: (political, economical, and institutional pressures that are hindering an artist-led sector), and The Ugly: (the quirky situations you can get youself into when basking in the swampy goodness of a healthy arts ecosystem).

As always, we welcome your thoughts and participation via our live chat (a great chance to ask Paul direct questions about his experiance).

If you can’t make it live, submit your questions in advance by emailing, and watch us back on YouTube! The recording will be available instantly after the live stream.

BVAA would love to make our live streamed discussions as accessible and inclusive as possible. If there are any specific accessibility needs we can help out with, please email us! And feedback for future discussions is very welcomed!
