Happy Lunar New Year 2023📽☎️💖💗 I wish you good health and happiness in the upcoming year. This zine [draft, with a few more slides to add] is about Hiram To at John Mills National, an artist-run space in Brisbane 1986-1987 located at 40 Charlotte Street. John Mills Annexe, at the time - which showed artist slides and small art works - was the smallest artist-run space in Australia. It was a safe place where Hiram, among many others, refused to be invisible.

Hiram was an exceptional artist but I always felt that he was never properly understood by other artists and critics. He was aware of that himself cf. "Please don't let me be misunderstood". I wonder whether that was due to the wide number of influences on his art from his Aberdeen Scottish art school and his feeling for UK culture, to his roots in Honkers, to his appraisal of contemporary popular culture in Australia and elsewhere. not to mention cake decoration !! And not least the issue of being that rare thing in those days... a Chinese artist in Australia... and his own musings (doubts/ conflicts???) about his ethnicity which were never spoken out aloud. I found his work very tough to fully comprehend especially as he was hmself reticent to talk about it in detail, just assuming that his viewers would grasp the issue by osmosis as it were. He had one Canadian theorist... sorry forget her name and she was the only one really that got to grips with what he was doing.

He was very old-style "English" in so many ways.. gentlemanly, reticent, dislike of unseemly behaviour, refined taste... could be one key to his work
