The Anarchive.

The anarchive refers to the fact that the archive in the digital age never sits still. Digital media events are reactivatable by nature, and lend themselves to re-uptake, remix and contagion. There is an in-built unruliness to them. This calls into question traditional practices of documentation and archiving, which operate on a model of passive storage. The anarchive is a kind of dynamic, open-air archiving in which media events are let loose to proliferate through networks, mutating as they go, and triggering follow-on events

EXTRA | Project Two

EXTRA is an Australian networked ARI memory zine collaboration building from past, present and future ‘living’ archival art initiatives. In particular, EXTRA Zine builds out from extensive ARI Remix memory work collaborations 2011- 2021. As an artist facilitator of memory work with long-standing experience inside artist-run spaces this ‘living archives’ project is made entirely possible by a pluralising, democratising, participatory and DIY ethos, an essential characteristic of Queensland/Australian artist-run communities of practice.

Hello dear peers, colleagues, friends and allies,

I hope this message finds you well this year.

As you may already know, in 2024 we are raising funds towards the Web 2.0 digital infrastucture required for the ongoing ARI Remix Project and to help grow and sustain the project here:

https://gofund.me/77b80637

Here is some added contextual information and the donation link for your reference.

Hello! Help Paul GROW the ARI REMIX PROJECT 2024

I am thrilled and delighted this year to turn sixty years of age this month. I am immensly grateful to be alive, healthy and continuing what I feel is essential creative work, made possible through a participatory and DIY ethos and long-standing community-based engagement in the Australian arts sector.

This engagement began in the 1978-1980 when I was involved with the Northside Creative Artists` Association in Brisbane in 1978, The Flying Art School in 1979-1980 and these foundational experiences ignited my passion for collectivising and democratising INSIDE the arts sector. This passion, largely volunteer-based endures with the long standing support, care and enthusiasm of friends, peers, colleagues, collaborators and allies. I am truly grateful for this in immeasurable ways.

Today I am writing to everyone about a current site of creative practice, one that many of you will already be familiar with at some level, the ongoing ARI REMIX Project. In 2024, I/we need to raise $3000 towards necessary monthly digital/ IT costs, which are difficult to maintain as an independent artist operating in a peristent climate of artistic precarity. Thanks for kindly reading this, and if you are indeed interested in helping with 2024 memory work creative developments with ARI REMIX here is the link/info which is easily accessed here:

Thanking you in anticipation of your generous donation, and for kindly sharing this link to your colleagues and network.

My best wishes for 2024,

Paul

Hello! Wishing you a Happy Lunar New Year 2024 everyone, a wonderful year of the wood dragon ahoy. I hope it`s a year of abundant good health, vitality, creativity and prosperity for one and all.

Yes. It`s true.

We are indeed making `extra` memory zines for the ARI Remix Project in 2024. This memory zine is a brief account of my involvement in Queer TV, Sydney 1991-1992.

Defend Griffith University Art Museum (GUAM): Preserve Our Artistic and Cultural Legacy!

Since the 1970s GUAM continues to play an essential role in the Australian contemporary art sector, it`s curatorial and collecting mandates remain a critical and empowering force in Queensland and nation-wide. Through a queer identities lens GUAM maintains an enduring and vital role in fighting against the persistent symbolic annihilation and erasure of historically marginalised groups. I am immensely grateful to be part of a vibrant cohort of Queensland/Australian new media artists/queer media artists and LGBTQIA+ colleagues who were kindly collected by Griffith University throughout the 1990s as dialogic, social practice, new media approaches, queer theory and queer creative practices were emerging in full force around the globe. This example of ephemera re-centred in this memory post tells a little story about this very queer and long long overdue cultural moment when historically marginalised people were actively and affectively curated, discussed and included inside this important memory institution. The GUAM gallery collection and the critical role GUAM maintains in advocating for marginalised artists and artist groupings is now gravely `at risk`. I urge and implore you to sign this petition and help to amplify the need for GUAM in a sector already significantly vexed by dominant narratives, cultural elitism, conservatism, homophobia, neoliberalism and selective amnesia.

IMA Market Day 2023 | 11 November 2023 10am-4pm

So many truly delightful, loving and caring conversations with ARI founders/members past, present and emerging, artists, makers and co-creatives at the “BVAA and Friends” IMA market stall today, woohoo. Thanks, so much Brisbane Visual Arts Advocacy [BVAA] ARI for kindly inviting me along to participate, talk and share ARI memory zines, it was totally brill, and the six hours of lively discussion and engagement with friends and allies, a totally transformative feeling.

A big hearty thanks to both BVAA and the IMA Bookshop Manager Caitlin Sheedy for the immeasurable invisible labour, and an essential DIY, participatory and democratising mindset involved in facilitating, recognising and representing the diversity of creative practice in Queensland. A vivacious array of works and studio insights by artists who self-identify as ARI change agents, Queer LGBTQIA+, chronically ill, living and working with arts and diffability…art works, artefacts and memories produced by people, for people. In my 48 years of going to the Institute of Modern Art, this annual event is a clarion reminder of the IMA at it’s very best. At the cusp of 50 year anniversary of the IMA in 2025 I hope that the non-dominant, non-elite, non-profit, non-conservative, dialogic, critical and community-based activity abuzz today helps to directly shape and inform a fabulous, inclusive, emotionally-intelligent and community-based future for the IMA in the next fifty years, and to help make art a little less hard than it often is for Queensland-born/Queensland-based artists…love and hugs Paul Andrew, queer activist, artist and artist facilitator of memory work @vignettestream @extra_zine
