Independent & DIY artist-run initiatives (ARIs), community archives and community archiving on the run….

Doing It Together, Remembering Together, anywhere beyond custody

The Anarchive.

The anarchive refers to the fact that the archive in the digital age never sits still. Digital media events are reactivatable by nature, and lend themselves to re-uptake, remix and contagion. There is an in-built unruliness to them. This calls into question traditional practices of documentation and archiving, which operate on a model of passive storage. The anarchive is a kind of dynamic, open-air archiving in which media events are let loose to proliferate through networks, mutating as they go, and triggering follow-on events

EXTRA
EXTRA is an Australian networked zine collaboration building from past, present and future ‘living’ archival art initiatives. In particular, EXTRA Zine builds out from extensive ARI Remix memory work collaborations 2011-2021.

We are thrilled and delighted to launch this anarchive as anthology online on 8 August 2022. EXTRA zine collaborations aim to place added emphasis on the hidden histories, marginalised narratives and digitised artists’ ephemera – ‘at risk’ artists’ ephemera – safeguarded in the personal archives of artists and artworkers. Activists, co-creatives among many others who were directly involved in the expanded and expanding Queensland/Australian artist-run ecology in the 1940 to Now temporality.

Thank you GUAM!

Complementary to the ‘Jeff Gibson: Countertypes’ exhibition was a lively multi-perspectival panel discussion ‘Artist Run Initiatives in Queensland’, with artists, curators and writers currently involved in artist-run-initiatives (ARIs) in South-East Queensland including panelists Libby Harward – Artist and co-founder of Munnimbah-Dja culture space, Georgia Hayward – Artist, curator, arts worker and General Manager of Outer Space, Amelia McLeish – Artist, administrator, researcher, a current Wreckers Artspace Organizer and co-founder of Nextdoor ARI. Chair Simone Hine – Artist, curator, writer and founding co-director of Kuiper Projects, Screen Space and Beam Contemporary enabled vibrant conversation and vivid storytelling on Saturday 6 August, 3.30-5pm at Griffith University Art Museum, 226 Grey St, South Brisbane QLD 4101. An absolute joy to experience different points of view about the ongoing and persistent nature of SEQ ARIs, passionate people reporting on a diversity of approaches to self-organising by artists on their own terms...

Hello ! NAIDOC Week (3-10 July) is happening now, an opportunity for all people to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week recognises and celebrates the history and culture of Indigenous Australians through events, grants, a poster competition and the National NAIDOC Week Awards Ceremony, which showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence.

This year’s theme calls for us all to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for systemic change and keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities.

You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through official NAIDOC activities and events held across the country. And for Brisbane Meeanjin locals, allies, artists and co-creatives,

Blaklash Creative (@blaklashcreative)
