Project One

A QUEENSLAND/AUSTRALIAN ARTIST-RUN COMMUNITY ANTHOLOGY 2022-2026

ARI REMIX + EXTRA ZINE | Queensland/Australian Independent & DIY artist-run initiatives (ARIs), and artist-run community archiving through zine making practice…

“ BECOMING IS BEING, MULTIPLICITY IS UNITY, CHANCE IS NECESSITY…”

— DELEUZE, GILLES. NIETZSCHE ET LA PHILOSOPHIE.

The Anarchive.

The anarchive refers to the fact that the archive in the digital age never sits still. Digital media events are reactivatable by nature, and lend themselves to re-uptake, remix and contagion. There is an in-built unruliness to them. This calls into question traditional practices of documentation and archiving, which operate on a model of passive storage. The anarchive is a kind of dynamic, open-air archiving in which media events are let loose to proliferate through networks, mutating as they go, and triggering follow-on events

EXTRA | Project One

EXTRA is an Australian networked zine collaboration building from past, present and future ‘living’ archival art initiatives. In particular, EXTRA Zine builds out from extensive ARI Remix memory work collaborations 2011-2021.

We are thrilled and delighted to launch this community-based anarchive as anthology online on 8 August 2022. EXTRA zine collaborations aim to place added emphasis on the hidden histories, marginalised narratives and digitised ‘at risk’  currently  safeguarded in the personal archives of artists and artworkers.

Activists, co-creatives among many others who were directly involved in the  expanded and expanding Queensland/Australian artist-run ecology in the 1940 to Now temporality.

Hello Happy Autumn 2023 🙂

Thank you Sarah Thomson and HBRG team, it was an absolute pleasure to be invited to speak with esteemed colleagues at the Better Together: Artist Collectives public program at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery on Saturday 18th February 2023. Great to speak about artist collectives, artist co-operatives and artist run initiatives that have a long, iterative and enduring legacy in Australia’s art ecosystem, supporting the careers of some of our most significant artists.

Sharing conversations during a morning of talks and networking, artists from across the Wide Bay region about many different ways artist collectives provide support and opportunities to both their members and the broader community through innovative models, an all too rare and important community conversation. I am truly grateful to hear so many enthusiastic creatives talk about the ongoing and persistent work of ARI thinking and ARI doing. The ARI Remix + EXTRA Zine 2011-2023 memory work post which provided examples and helped guide my talk is accessible here: https://remix.org.au/better-together-artist-collectives-paul-andrew-six-practical-ways-to-think-about-artist-collectives

Thanks dear Jay for your enthralling zine contribution, it`s also an important acknowledgement of the long standing work of Dr Margriet Bonin who was the foundation Director of the Queensland Film and Drama Centre (now Griffith University Art Museum [GUAM] and previously Griffith Artworks) taking up her appointment in 1978 at a time when incendiary punk/post-punk artist-run culture was emerging - thanks so much we are truly grateful. https://remix.org.au/extra-zine-issue-26-the-embryos-whispered-to-those-that-would-later-go-to-sydney-by-jay-younger ...

Happy Lunar New Year 2023 🤓🌸🐞🐝🐝🌺🎶🎹 I wish you good health and happiness in the upcoming year. This zine [draft, with a few more slides to add] is about artist Hiram To at John Mills National, an artist-run space in Brisbane 1986-1987 located at 40 Charlotte Street. John Mills Annexe, at the front door to the main artist-run gallery, was at the time the smallest artist-run space in Australia. It was a safe place where Hiram, among many others, refused to be invisible.
