CONTEXTUAL INFO

You Tube – Uploaded on Aug 24, 2010

1986 video art by Stephen Stockwell. The vision is processed Super8 footage, some time lapse of urban scenes and some marked directly onto the film. The vision was transferred to video, processed through various mid 80s video effects, edited to the music on 3/4 inch U-matic tape, dubbed onto VHS and recently transferred to digital. The music is a traditional rhythm from an anonymous African Fire Cult that was found on a sound effects record and processed through various analog effects. The piece reflects on the continuity, and unity, of traditional, tribal life and our post-modern, technologically intensive existence. Under our suits we are still wild, instinctive beings; or looking in the other direction, humans have been producing the simulacra for 60,000 years
