Wendy Mills’ installation ‘View of divine union: a temporary affair’ was shown in 1983 at 40 Charlotte Street, also known as the John Mills Himself building. She sub-let this space from 1982-89 as a studio and gallery, and shared it with other local artists including Lyndall Milani, Judith Wright and June Tupicoff. “During part of the 1980’s I lived in a share house with poets, writers, musicians, refugees, environmental and political activists. We had a loose connection with the West End Catholic Anarchists and were under surveillance by Queensland Police Special Branch. We suspected our phone was tapped and we knew for certain they came to our door mainly disguised as collectors for the Red Cross and trying to gather information about our associates and us. There was a slight feel of revolution in the air but life was easy in Australia.” (ARI Remix Project interview)

Wendy Mills’ installation ‘View of divine union: a temporary affair’ featured transparent geometric forms constructed from polythene suspended in a low-lit space. Plastic veils, cubes and prisms were weighted down with water, while a large segmented pyramid was pierced by a shimmering upturned obelisk. The installation was accompanied by a soundscape produced on a Moog Synthesizer by Graham McConkey in Sydney. While many photographs were taken of this work, the Griffith University Art Collection holds one of only two sets of cibachrome photographs that were produced by the artist as documentation.

This absolutely stellar human, Jorgen Doyle picturemorgue, has been working tirelessly for weeks/months on the front area of WTS to produce a beautiful native garden, fit with reticulation and, soon to come, a little zine with Beth Sometimes mood_light as a manual /educator / guide to the garden and all its special plants. Jorgen started this project a year ago but went back to Jakarta where he and wonderful Hannah Ekin hushhushhannah live when they’re not in Alice/Mparntwe, learning and helping out wherever they go. Throughout the year Beth looked after the few plants that had grown from that first stage, until Jorgen and Hannah returned in the heat of summer this year with the floral-shirted, smiley gentle Jorgen diving right back in. Queensland College of Art/Griffith University alumna Wendy Mills works with a diverse range of media including temporary installations, digital artworks and commissioned public art. After completing her studies at QCA’s Morningside campus in the late 1970’s, Mills became known for her temporary installations made from translucent and reflective materials such as plastics, water and light. She found inspiration in sacred architecture such as prisms, spirals and pyramids and used these forms to create sacred spaces combining spirituality and geometry.
